Scaling up a bioprocess brings a host of new challenges. The sheer volume of production-sized bioreactors inherently limits some of the operational parameters available.

How does scale-up impact bioprocessing?
Temperature, oxygen distribution, nutrients, and pH all behave as gradients across the fermentation media. Agitation limits this gradient in small volumes at the benchtop scale. However, achieving the same degree of mixing by agitation at large scales would result in shear forces that stress cells and result in their death.
We believe it is critical to understand the window of operation at the benchtop scale before committing to expensive scale-up attempts. Throughout the scale-up process, we rely on analytical data to inform product quality and success in scaling up the bioprocess.
